Hi! I’m Carmel! I am a teacher, a mom of 3, a wife and a recovering perfectionist!
I have been teaching elementary school, or primary school as we say here in Ireland, for over 12 years.
I have taught children of all ages and all backgrounds. I have absolutely loved every minute of it and find joy in seeing the pieces fall into place for them as they learn a new skill.
Just like everyone else, I struggled with teaching when it all went online in March 2020. My heart broke for the children who couldn’t access the material in the same way that they could in school. I sympathised with parents who, despite the best efforts of their child’s teacher, had to watch their child fall behind at this time.
I wanted to find a way to help these parents to help their children. Teaching during the pandemic was a nightmare. There is no substitute for in-person learning, especially for young children who are learning a host of new skills. In-person learning does not have to be in school, homeschooling has increased dramatically since 2020 and why wouldn’t it.
Moms, like yourself, who may have never dreamed of homeschooling found themselves responsible for their children’s education. Some of you even found that you enjoyed it. But then it came to the concrete teaching of essential academic skills, like reading, and you didn’t know where to start.
Maybe you have never heard the word ‘phonics’ before, or perhaps it is coming into your orbit now. Learning to read is such a complex skill and you may be struggling with where to start.
That’s where I come in. I have been teaching moms to teach their children how to read. While reading is a complex skill to learn, you can learn to teach it. You will need to know about pre-reading skills and reading readiness. I have lots of activities for your pre-reader that have been tried and tested by a very critical 4 year old! You will learn about the importance of phonics and why it is the best way to teach your child to read. Best of all you will learn a step by step process to follow in order to take your little one from a pre-reader to a confident and fluent reader. No ambiguity and no boredom! Just practical activities and tips for incorporating it into your new life as a homeschooler!
